F. Ames Smith Jr. MD

Dr. Smith earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1984. He received his surgical training at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston which he completed in 1990. He has been active in surgical practice since that time, first in Austin from 1990 to 2012, and later in Seattle from 2012 to 2022. Dr. Smith is an active member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. He currently has office hours available for in person or tele-health visits. 

 

In addition, he has a special interest in hereditary cancer management, having developed and led the Polyclinic Hereditary Cancer Risk Clinic in Seattle from 2012 to 2022. He received further cancer genetics education and certification through the City of Hope in 2019. He currently leads a monthly high-risk conference to review details of patient care with a team of providers for patients at high risk for various cancers. This part of his practice deals with assessing and managing various levels of cancer risk, with genetic risk being among the highest level of risk.

Dr. F. Ames Smith Jr. is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and an active member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. He specializes in the surgical management of benign and malignant diseases of the breast. His scope of surgical practice includes: excisional breast biopsy, lumpectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, axillary lymph node dissection, nipple sparing mastectomy (as well as other types of mastectomy). He has a special interest in management of hereditary (genetic) predisposition to cancer.
