Dr. F. Ames Smith
Physician Specialists Northwest is a breast cancer surgery and hereditary cancer screening and management practice serving the Inland Northwest region since 2022. Dr. F. Ames Smith Jr, an experienced breast cancer surgeon, founded this group with the purpose of bringing technical expertise and multi-disciplinary collaboration into the care of this patient population. Coordination of care, integrity, service, and compassion are especially important priorities of the practice.
Dr. Smith prioritizes the physician-patient relationship and patient experience, always seeking the best possible outcome with the least amount of anxiety.
About Dr. Smith
Dr. Smith's surgical practice is dedicated exclusively to the management of benign and malignant breast disease, and he brings over 30 years of surgical experience. Most recently, he served as Director of Breast Surgery as well as the Hereditary Cancer Risk Clinic at the Polyclinic in Seattle (a large multi-specialty group with over 200 providers). Given that up to 10 – 15% of cancers are predisposed by a hereditary component (definable genetic mutation), he also screens for risk factors for hereditary cancer, including especially a strong family history of cancer. If a genetic mutation is identified, there are effective strategies to lower risk for various cancers or otherwise diagnose early. He strives to communicate clearly with each patient, understanding the context of their clinical risk factors and presentation while also explaining options for treatment, risks and benefits. Dr. Smith works effectively with teams of providers, recognizing that input from multiple specialties is frequently critical.
